Abstract

By using ERA-40 sea surface wind field from ECMWF(European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts),the seasonal characteristics of sea surface wind field in the North Pacific Ocean were analyzed. Results show that,(1)There is obviously seasonal variability in wind speed and wind direction.(2)From annual average wind speed, the Aleutian Islands off the coast of the North Pacific annual average wind speed significantly large value center, the annual average wind speed substantially above 8m/s;mid- latitude waters of the annual average wind speed in the 6-7m/s;15°N-20°N east coast there is a relatively large area, the annual average wind speed is more than 7m/s;equatorial waters west of the annual average wind speed within 4m/s.
