Modification of Low Chromate Passivating Film on Zinc Plating

Abstract

The passivating films of zinc plating were modified by adding H3PO4, SiO2, Ti(Ⅳ) compound in low chromate solution. The morphology and composition of chromate film were studied by means of SEM, EDS, XRD, and the reaction mechanism in formation of passivating film was also discussed. The results of neutral salt spray test showed that the white rust resistance of passive film formed from CrO3-H3PO4-SiO2 systems and CrO3-Ti(Ⅳ) systems was of 4-6 times better than that of conventional low chromate film.
