Abstract

Objective To investigate the main types of astigmatism, astigmatism degree and distribution in the children aged 7~15. Methods 249 cases (498 eyes) were selected randomly in our optometry clinic patients from August to October 2009, the optometry was achieved while eye was dilated by 1% tropicamide. Results of 498 eyes of refractive errors, the eyes with astigmatism account for 80.3% (400/498). In the eyes with astigmatism, compound myopic astigmatism up to 50.2%, followed by the 21.1% compound hyperopic astigmatism and mixed astigmatism of 7%. Astigmatism ≤1.00D accounted for 57%, ≤2.00D accounted for 22.5%, ≤3.00D accounted for 12.5%, ≥3.25D accounted for 8%. According to the astigmatism axis, astigmatism with the rule, astigmatism against the rule and oblique astigmatism account for 87.5%, 6.5% and 6% respectively. Conclusion The detection rate of the astigmatism in 7~15 year-old children was 80.3%, the low to moderate astigmatism are majority in various age groups, most of the 7~9-year-old children was compound hyperopic astigmatism, however, compound myopic astigmatism constituted the most of the 10-15-year-old children, astigmatism with the rule was the most part of all age groups.
