The effect of cervical cerclage on the outcome of pregnancies

Abstract

Objective To study the effect of cervical cerclage on the outcome of pregnancies. Methods Retrospective analysis was made on 279 cases of cervical cerclage. Results The rates of term birth and neonatal survival were increased significantly (P0.05). There was a positive correlation between the gestational age at delivery and that at cerclage(r=0.57,P0.05), and a negative correlation between the former one and the number of previous spontaneous abortions/premature deliveries(r=-0.53,P0.05). The gestational age at delivery was not correlated with the history of prior cerclage placement(P0.05). There was no correlation between the complications (premature rupture of membrane, cervical lacerations) and the determinants of cerclage placement (P0.05). Conclusion Cervical cerclage is a safe and effective treatment for cervical incompetence.
