The Research of Clinical Anatomy in the Lateral Nasal Cartilage (LNC)

Objective:The purpose of this investigation was to obtain the data about the cartilaginous measurements and ascertain the macroscopic details at rhinion and throughout the cartilaginous nasal pyramid in 15 Chinese cadavers (30 sides).Methods: Demographic information on 15 Chinese cadavers was collected. All soft tissues were removed from the nasal bones, lateral nasal cartilages, and alar cartilages and the overlap between bone and cartilage was measured at 4 sites. The lateral nasal cartilage (LNC) was measured for width and length. Results: The LNC was( 19.84 ±1.51)mm long and(9.80±1.50)mm wide on average. It underlapped the nasal bone(10.56±2.22 mm on average) from the nasal septum laterally. The area of cephalocaudal underlapping was the greatest in the midline [mean(5.65±1.50)mm] and the least[mean(1.60±0.58)mm] about halfway down the nasal bone. The septum and LNC is completely in fusion.Conclusion: In aesthetic, functional, or post traumatic nasal surgeries, one must be aware of dealing with diverse attachments between the septum and the LNC.
