Abstract

By studying the history of Jing Han and Long Hai railways in late Qing Dynasty and Republic of China, this paper finds that the development of those two railways not only determined the spatial development pattern of Zhengzhou but also drove the business development of the city, which led to the disorder of the urban development due to the absence of scientific planning. After the PRC was established, the urban planning was the most important factor to the urban spatial structure of Zhengzhou, because the rational distribution of industries was one of the important contents of urban planning at that time. The characteristics of urban spatial structure were quite different during two periods because the dominant forces of urban development were different. The former is in disorder and the latter is on the contrary. Many problems in current urban development of Zhengzhou are closely related with the particularity which was formed in its early development.
