Abstract

As a form of utterance communication,English humor is paradoxical while harmonious.According to relevance theory, utterance communication is a cognitive process of ostensive inference;and humor comes from the contrast between most relevance and optimal relevance.A proper understanding of humorous utterances calls for reasonable explanations to meet the expectations of optimal relevance on the basis of context inference.
