Philosophical significance of the methodology of JIAO Xun's Yi learning

Abstract

By the diagrams such as Pang long (laterally linked hexagrams) , Dang wei shi dao (matching positions but losing Dao) , Xiang cuo (interchanging hexagrams) and proportion illustrated in his Yi tu lue, JIAO Xun founded a logical analogous inferring image-number structure and fused his moral ideal into it, having established not only the methodology for the studies of the Yi learning but also a philosophical significance depended mainly on the theory of Pang long. Its positive significance is shown as that it runs out of the old trail of interpreting Yi with philosophical connotations or images numbers, marking an important diversion of the studies of the Yi learning in the mid and late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Yet, its negative influences are shown as that it mixed the independence between the image-number system and that of philosophical connotations of the Yi learning, philosophical values of the Yi learning being replaced by the tool value of logical analogy of it.
