Abstract
Objective To evaluate clinical significance of the effect of rectal examination, needle biopsy and prostatectomy on serum prostate specific antigen(PSA) concentration. Methods A total of 138 patients who presented prostatic problems (BPH, prostate cancer and prostatitis) were studied prospectively, the effects of digital rectal examination (DRE), the bladder catheterized, prostate biopsy and prostatectomy on serum PSA concentration were observed. Results The DRE had not clinical significant effect on serum PSA concentration of 138 patients with prostatic problems (P0 05). 70 of 138 patients had serum PSA concentration remarkable elevation after prostate biopsy (P0 01), and 32 patients with BPH had serum PSA obviously concentration elevation after prostatectomy (P0 01). 15 of 138 patients had serum PSA concentration significantly elevation when the bladder was catheterized, and serum PSA was significantly lowed by prostatectomy (P0 01).Conclusions DRE had not clinical significant effect on serum PSA concentration. We note a 1 4-fold increase in the post-prostate biopsy on serum PSA concentration, and which had a 1 8-fold increase after prostatectomy. It was a 3 5-fold increase on serum PSA concentration when the bladder was catheterized, and which was a 1.6-fold decrease after prostatectomy.
