Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of quetiapine vs. haloperidol treatment for treatment of mental behavior symptom in patients with Alzheimer's disease. METHODS: A total of 64 patients treated in Liaoning Jinzhou Kangning Hospital hereinafter referred to our hospital for mental behavior dysfunction in patients with Alzheimer's disease were randomly divided into either quetiapine group( 145 ± 50) mg / d or haloperidol group( 4. 5 ±1. 5) mg / d,of 32 cases each. After treatment of two weeks, the pathological scores for dementia, efficacy and safety in two groups were recorded. RESULTS: After treatment, the pathological score for dementia in both group were significantly reduced as compared with before treatment( P 0. 05) and the adverse drug reactions were significantly less frequent in quetiapine-treated group than in haloperidol-treated group,[31. 3%( 10 /32) ]vs 46. 9%( 15 /32) ],and the difference was statistically significant( P 0. 05). CONCLUSIONS: Quetiapine is more safe and effective than haloperidol in the treatment of mental behavior symptoms in patients with Alzheimer's disease and it can effectively promote the rapid recovery of behavior function in patients with Alzheimer's disease.
