Abstract

Cognitive linguists hold that metaphor not only is an important tool in human cognition and thought, but also plays a vital role in the conceptualization of emotion concepts. Based on corpora, this paper mainly compares metaphors of five basic emotion concepts (love, happiness, sadness, anger, and fear) in English and Chinese in the theoretical framework of the contemporary conceptual metaphor theory. The result is that many similarities in emotion metaphors behind metaphorical expressions can be found at the generic level while cultural variations occur at the specific level.
