Abstract
The aerators are widely used in flood discharge tunnels and spillways to prevent the cavitation damage of the structures, and air is sucked by flow from the bottom in normal aerator. When applying normal aerators in a spillway tunnel characterized by high head and large-discharge,the downstream sidewalls near to the ogee spillway is easy to be damaged by cavitation because there exist nonaerated flow. Two kinds of lateral direction aerators have been put forward in this paper, based on a large-scale model experiment, the area which is nearby the un-aerated flow and on the sidewalls beneath the ogee spillway can be eliminated completely while using the two kinds of lateral direction aerator.
