Toward Appearance of Merchants of the Non-Han Nationalities in the Novels of the Tang and the Five Dynasties

Abstract

In the novels of the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties, there exist merchants of the non-Han nationalities who were rather active as groups of businessmen, and their appearance represents a distinctive type of cultural phenomenon. It will help to grasp this phenomenon as a whole and then go on with searching for its cultural connotations, when explorations are made into these five problem: the original places where merchants of the non-Han nationalities come from; the causes for them coming to China; their occupations in China; their distribution and the trend of their mixing up with the Hans; and the complicated state of mind caused by merchants of die non-Han nationalities on the part of the people in the Tang Dynasty and the Five Dynasties.
