Measurements of Zeta potential on filter media using the streaming potential method

Abstract

Zeta potential is a very important surface property of water treatment filter media,so researching the zeta potential of filter media can aid in improving filtration efficiency and developing modified filter media.The zeta potential indicates the electrochemical properties of the filter media.According to the relationship between the streaming potential and the zeta potential of filter media,an apparatus for measuring the zeta potential of filter media was designed and built.Based on the measurements,when the particle size distribution was between 0.45 mm and 0.90 mm,the zeta potentials of magnetite,anthracite,walnut shells and haydite were-27.64 mV,-6.54 mV,-5.87 mV,-2.30 mV,respectively.FTIR and XPS results showed that the diversity of zeta potential of magnetite,anthracite,walnut shell and haydite could be ascribed to the differences in their surface chemistry.
