Abstract

A new reagent 4-(-4-methy-2-nitrophenyldiazo)-4'-nitroazobenzene(abbreviated as MNDACB below) was synthesized, and its colour reaction with Hg(Ⅱ) was studied. In the presence of Triton X-100,Hg(Ⅱ) reacts with MNDACB to form a red complex in a medium of Na2B4O7-NaOH buffer of pH11.0.The apparent molar absorptivity is 1.45×105 L·mol-1·cm-1 at the maximum absorption of 495 nm,and Beer's Law is obeyed in the concentration range of 0~0.8μg/mL for Hg(Ⅱ).The method is simple, and it has high sensitivity. It has been applied to the determination of trace amounts of Hg(Ⅱ) directly in waste water with satisfactory results.
