Abstract
Objective: To investigate the expression of epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) in astrocytoma specimen in Chinese and its relationship with tumor grade. Methods: The expression of EGFR in human astrocytoma specimen, several cultured human and rat glioma cell lines were examined by immunohistochemistry staining. Results: The average expression of EGFR in astrocytoma tissues(70.3%,26/37) was significantly higher than that in adjacent tissues(32.4%,12/37, P 0.01).The expression of EGFR was positively correlated with tumor grade,EGFR expression in grade Ⅲ Ⅳ(21/25) was significantly higher than that in gradeⅠ Ⅱ (5/12, P 0.01).Heterogenous glioma cell lines presented different levels of EGFR expression. Conclusion: EGFR is overexpressed in Chinese astrocytoma.EGFR can be regarded as an indicator of malignant potential and a molecular marker for gliomas.
