Abstract
Objective To study the relationship between hyperhomocysteinemia and carotid stenosis in old stroke patients. Methods 126 patients(above 60 years old)with carotid ischemic stroke were examined by digital subtraction angiography to detect carotid stenosis. The patients were divided into three groups:the slight stenosis group, the moderate stenosis group and the severe stenosis group. The serum homocysteine(Hcy)levels in different groups were compared with the normal group. Results The Hcy level was significantly higher in the stenosis groups than in the normal group(P0.01),significantly higher in the severe stenosis group than in the slight moderate stenosis groups(P0.01),and significantly higher in the moderate stenosis group than in the slight stenosis group(P0.01).Conclusion Hyperhomocysteinemia may be an important risk factor for atherosclerosis, and it is highly correlated with the severity of the carotid stenosis.
