Expression of survivin protein in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and its significance

Abstract

Objective:To investigate the expression of survivin proteins in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and its clinical significance.Methods:The expression of survivin protein was detected by immunohistochemical staining method in 47 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma samples and 10 normal epithelial tissues of esophagus.The expression of survivin proteins and its correlation with clinical pathological characteristics and prognosis were assessed.Results:The expression of survivin protein was located in the cytoplasm of cancer cells.The positive expression rate of survivin protein in 47 cancerous tissues was 93.6%.No expression of survivin protein was detected in 10 non-cancerous normal tissues of esophagus.The expression of survivin was correlated with histological differentiation degree(P0.05).Lower expression of survivin in well-differentiated carcinomas was much more than that in middle-differentiated carcinomas.There was an inverse correlation between the survivin expression and histological differentiation degree.The univariate analysis showed that the survival rates of patients with higher level of expression of survivin were significantly lower than that of patients with lower level of expression of survivin(P0.05).The Logistic multivariate analysis showed that the expression level of survivin protein was independent prognostic factor.There was a significant correlation between the expression of survivin protein and treatment failure(P0.01).Conclusion:The expression of survivin was correlated with histological differentiation degree.The expression level of survivin protein is independent parameter for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma,and higher expression of survivin may predict the higher incidence of treatment failures.
