Abstract

By using different kinds of data, several analytic methods for determining the depths of thermocline, halocline and pycnocline are compared in detail. It shows that the depths which are obtained by using different data analysing methods are different. If the data was of high precision for analysing thermocline, halocline and pycnocline, the influence from small scale variations must be filtered. The analysing methods should be chosen according to specific research purposes and the situation of the data to be used. If the improved vertical gradient method is used to analyse thermocline, halocline and pycnocline, continuity must be guaranteed in regions where shallow water and deep water meet.
