Abstract
The special properties of high liquid limit laterite in western Hunan are revealed through laboratory test. Based on the characters of high liquid limit laterite, the embankment filling tests are carried out,and the compacted effect of the high liquid limit laterite embankment under different combinations of conditions such as moisture, loose laying depth and rolling machinesis is studied. The results show that the high liquid limit laterite with 1. 0-1. 3 natural consistency can be used directly as the filler of the embankment. The degree of compaction can be controlled at 88%,and the embankment should be compacted near the maximum strength water content. Better compacted effect can be achieved through controlling the laterite filling with 25-30 cm loosing thickness and using the 18 t or heavier roller for static compaction one time and vibration compaction 2-4times.
