Investigation on the correction of malocclusion and consciousness of orthodontics among children in Taiyuan

Objective To investigate the rate of correction of malocclusion in the permanent dentitions among children in Taiyuan and the recognition on malocclusion and consciousness of orthodontic treatment.Methods By clinical examination and questionnaire,a random sample of 4 201 children with permanent dentition was found from 7 785 elementary and middle schoolchildren in five schools.A total of 4 159 pieces of questionnaires were returned.Results The rate of correction of malocclusion in adolescent was up to 17.53%.The parents' will was the main reason of orthodontic treatment,and accounted for 49.78%.But the parents did not choose the orthodontic treatment mainly because they didn't think there was malocclusion and long course of treatment affected the learning.Conclusion The rate of correction of malocclusion in Taiyuan is much lower.The recognition about malocclusion and orthodontic treatment are different from the age,sex and stage in life.It is important to strengthen the introduce of the knowledge on malocclusion and orthodontic treatment to the adolescents and their parents and enhance the consciousness of orthodontics.
