Abstract

Excitatory amino acid transporters (EAAT) localizes on the presynaptic membrane, synaptic vesicle and glial membrane. The rapid and efficient clearance of extracellular glutamate into neurons and glia by these transporters is postulated to contribute to the recycling of the transmitter, the termination of the excitatory signal, and the protection of neurons from excitotoxic injury. This review focuses on recent progress in the studies of EAAT with emphasis on EAAT pharmacology.
