Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of cells in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF) on the pulmonary function of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF).Methods: Thirty-two patients with IPF underwent pulmonary function tests(PFTs) and bronchoalveolar lavage(BAL) at rest.HE staining was performed to analyze the cell composition in BALF.The relationship between the percentage of each cell type and the results of PFTs was analyzed by using linear regression.Results: There was significant negative correlation both between the percentage of eosinophils in BALF and %VC(r=-0.37,P0.05) and between the percentage of eosinophils in BALF samples and D_LCO%(r=-0.47,P0.01).Both V·_(50%)(r=-0.66,P0.01) and V·_(25%)(r=-0.45,P0.05) correlated positively with the percentage of neutrophils in BALF.Conclusion: Eosinophils and neutrophils in BALF may contribute to the pulmonary dysfunction in patients with IPF.
