Subtotal splenectomy and disconnection for the treatment of portal hypertension in children: report of 16 cases

Objective To investigate the treatment efficacy of subtotal splenectomy and disconnection portal hypertension in children. Methods 16 children were diagnosised as portal hypertension. Subtotal splenectomy and disconnection were administered in those children. The effect of subtotal splenectomy and disconnection was followed up. Results Neither recurrence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding and hypersplenia nor serious infection took place after operation. Mortality is zero. The postoperative recovery was good. Conclusions The subtotal splenectomy and disconnection is a good treatment for portal hypertension in children.
