Understanding the May Fourth Movement in the context of historical and cultural crossroads brings in historical compassion on the Movement. The May Fourth Movement is a summit of the second blending of Chinese and Western culture.Facing Western culture, which at that time was far more advanced than hers,China’s national concern flew out,and consequently triggered the Movement’s strategic and cultural adjustment in the pattern of radicalism. The cultural adjustment happens in various fields and levels: in the spirit level, the Movement advocates independence of spirit and freedom of thoughts, which triggers two major cultural events, the Literature Reform and the movement of Rearranging National Heritage;in the aspect of social effect, the Movement causes the reorientation of some political and economic organizations;in the aspect of system, the Movement breaks the three cardinal guides and the five constant virtues and to a certain extent, brings about the liberation of women.
