Abstract

There are still some problems in the studies on disyllabization of Medieval Chinese. The criteria for disyllable words are diverse and subjective to some extent. The measurement of the ratio of syllable words is impacted by the frequencies of words and the length of the literature.Especially, current research lacks in the consideration of the specific characteristics of Medieval Chinese.A new approach is proposed to solve these problems. It shows that the disyllabization ratios in Buddhism Scriptures are apparently higher than those of the Chinese literatures in the corresponding ages. The reason of disyllabization in Medieval Chinese is analyzed then from both the internal tendency of Chinese language and external factors of language contact.
