Abstract
The transportation of sediment in the process of flood in lower reaches of the Yellow River is closely related to flood wave type, sediment concentration and composition of sediment. In this paper, the change of sediment transport capacity of flood due to the regulation of reservoir is investigated. The study is based on the assumption that the sediment concentration and sediment composition of flood after regulation are the same as those in natural flood wave, only the type of flood wave including its peak discharge and time duration is changed. It is found that if the ratio of flood peak discharge after regulation to that before regulation λ≥0.32,the sediment transportation capacity of flood after regulated as a steady flow will not lower than that of natural flood. This conclusion is helpful in optimizing the operation of Xiaolangdi Reservoir for enhancing the sediment transport in the lower reaches of Yellow River.
