Abstract

The mechanical issues of the commonly-used pile and column type piers for bridges spanning the low grade navigation channels under the action of ship collision are studied.A bridge spanning the Grade 6 navigation channel in Zhejiang Province is taken as the research object and the finite element software ANSYS is used to conduct the mechanical analysis of the pile foundations of the piers of the bridge subjected to the ship collision in both the transverse and longitudinal directions of the bridge.The results of the analysis show that under the action of the ship collision in the transverse direction,the arrangement of the cross beams can redistribute bending moment in the pier columns and pile foundations,decrease the bending moment in a pier column and pile foundation that are directly collided by ship,increase the bending moment in the pile foundations of other piers and the maximum stress value in the cross section of a pier shaft collided by the ship does not have significant change.However,the stress levels in other areas decrease to some extent and the high stress level areas are reduced.Under the action of the ship collision in the longitudinal direction,the function of the arrangement of the cross beams is limited and the bending moment and stress changes in the pier columns and pile foundations are not significant.
