Abstract

To determine the monosaccharide composition and antioxidant activity of polysaccharides from Gynostemma pentaphyllum Makino. The monosaccharide components of polysaccharides were identified by gas chromatography(GC).The antioxidant activities of raw polysaccharides(GPMPP) and purified polysaccharides(GPMP) were investigated in vitro, including reducing power,DPPH,hydroxyl and superoxide radical scavenging activity, lipid peroxidation. The results showed that GPMP is composed of rhamnose, arabinose, xylose, mannose, glucose and galactose with a molar ratio of 1.39∶ 3.76∶ 1.00∶ 1.64∶ 4.98∶ 5.88.G.pentaphyllum polysaccharides had strong reducing power and obvious inhibition activity against lipid peroxidation,as well as strong hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity. The polysaccharides from G.pentaphyllum Makino have direct and potential antioxidant activities.
