Abstract

A statistical analysis of current data observed in the eastern South China Sea in 1997 and 1998 was made to obtain the occurrence frequencies of tidal current in different directions, the mean and maximum current speeds, the monthly mean current speeds and the maximum flood and ebb current speeds, and the joint probability distributions for current speed and direction, and the harmonic analysis of tidal current was also made to give the harmonic constants of principal constituent currents and the elliptical elements of tidal current. It is determined that the tidal current in the sea area belongs to regular diurnal tidal current.
