Abstract
Using different isolation methods under anaerobic condition, a strain No. 4 ofphotoorganotrophic bacterium has been obtained from activated sludge at Zhoyangwaste-water treatment plant, Shanghai, China. The cells are rod-shaped, slightlycurved, multiplying by budding, and growing either anaerobically in light oraerobically in dark. By observation of electron-microscope, utilization of carbon-source(or electron donors) and amino acids, requirement of factors, determination of absorptionspectrum, etc…, it is found that the major characteristics of this strain are in accodancewith those of Rhodopseudomonas palustris. This strain No. 4, therefore, has beenidentified as Rhodopseudomonas palustris.
