Relationship between adenoid hypertrophy and secretory otitis media in children

[Objective] To determine the incidence of secretory otitis media in children with adenoids hypertrophy and its prognosis after adenoidectomy.[Methods] There were 119 children with adenoids hypertrophy.The results of acoustic impedance tests,nasopharyngeal x-rays and pure tone tests were analyzed before the adenoidectomy.Seventy degree endoscopy was used to perform the adenoidectomy.Then the results of acoustic impedance tests and the state of tympanic membranes were followed up for 3 months.[Results] Forty-four children were diagnosed of secretory otitis media in the 119 cases with adenoid hypertrophy and the incidence rate was 36.97%.Forty-two children became normal acoustic impedance tests and tympanic membrane in 3 months after the adenoidectomy and the cure rate was 95.45%.[Conclusion] The incidence of secretory otitis media is very high in children with adenoid hypertrophy,and for them more emphasis should be put on the adenoidectomy treatment.It is of very importance to take the examination of acoustic impedance tests routinely in children with adenoid hypertrophy.
