Abstract

Objective To determine the ralationship of the serum C-reactive protein(CRP)levels and meta- bolic syndrome(MS)and carotid intima-media thickness(IMT).Methods Serum CRP,fasting lipids, blood glu- cose were measured in 135 patients with MS(MS group)and 145 patients with T2DM(DM group)and 94 controls (control group)respectively.Body height and weight were also measured.BMI was calculated.Carotid IMT was assessed using sensitive B-mode ultrasound in 135 patients with MS and 145 patients with T2DM respectively.Re- suits There were increasing number of the MS components associated with higher serum levels of CRP(X~2=161.8, P<0.01).Positive correlation was observed between CRP and carotid IMT(β=0.569,P=0.000)in DM group.TG and IMT in MS group showed in positive correlation(β=0.563,0.179,P=0.000,0.021).When CRP>3.0 mg/L,higher rate of carotid IMT≥1.0 mm,<1.3 mm and plaque were shown. Conclusion CRP is significantly related not only with MS but also with carotid IMT.(Shanghai Med J,2006,29:551-553)
