Abstract
Ian Mc Ewan's On Chesil Beachdetails a tragic love story about how the newlyweds,Florence and Edward,failed to have sex in their wedding night,thus leading to their breakup. The essay attempts to analyze the struggle between Id,Ego and Superego of Edward.From the perspective of Freudian theory of psychoanalysis,it is pointed out that Edward's psychology experiences three changes including Ego's suppression of Id,Id's disregard of Superego,and Superego's transcendence of Ego,based on which it aims to explore the causes of their breakup.
