Abstract

Objective To introduce a transcallosum interfornix approach for removing the tumors of the third ventricle in children. Methods 91 pediatric patients(ages ranged from 2 to 17 years)with third ventricle tumors were operated on via the approach of transcallosum interfornix. Results Under the operative microscope, the tumors were totally removed in 41 cases, subtotally in 41 cases, and partially in 9 cases. Conclusions The tumors which located at the anterior, middle, or posterior portion of the third ventricle can be removed via this approach. This approach provided a quite large operative field, and the septum pellucidum, the fornix, the inter cerebral vein, and the thalamus can be preserved intact. The postoperative complications were rare.
