How "Hell Wander" in Buddhism Came into Being and Its Cultural Essence

Abstract

In traditional Chinese culture,there was no term of but that of instead.The essential difference between the view of hell in Buddhism and that of ghostdom in traditional Chinese culture lies in that,the former claims it is morality rather than law that shall control people and evils shall be punished,both of which the latter lacks.That the faith in the hell got combined with China′s family religion and ancestors cult,is an important way in which Buddhism became integrated in Chinese culture.In the period of the six dynasties,there were many fictions,from which the view of hell in Buddhism came into being in China.This article analyzes Ming Xiang Ji,a miscellany that embodies most of those phantom fictions,by virtue of which we might acknowledge what the hell view in Buddhism added to that of the ghostdom in traditional Chinese culture and,how it became integrated into China′s native culture.
