The Origin and Development of Scientism and Its Influence on Contemporary China

In this paper the author gives a brief account of the emergence,the development of the modern western scientism,the contradictions between scientism and humanism,the spreading survey of the scientism in China and its present influence.It is maintained that,faced with the historic tasks of the new period,on the one hand we should fully and rationally develop and make use of scientific technology;on the other hand,we should prevent the trend of scientism,i.e.,we shoul combine the development of economy with the construction of spiritual civilization.Efforts should be made to build a virtuous and interactive situation in which science,technology and humane concern are mutually inclusive and complement each other.
