Abstract

The flow in tundish has a great effect on the floatation of non-metallic inclusions. The water model was built for simulating a thin slab casting tundish, and the effects of turbulence inhibitors with different configuration and size on fluid flow behavior were investigated by measuring residence time distribution curves (RTD). The results show that with the reasonable usage of turbulence inhibitor with proper configuration and size, the response time of the strand, the average residence time and plug flow volume increase, the dead zone volume decreases, and the characteristics of flow in tundish are impoved. The turbulence inhibitor with one dam shows the best coordination, while the turbulence inhibitor with one dam and one weir or one dam and two weirs seems to be inefficient in floating inclusion.
