Results of monitoring of iodine deficiency in Taizhou City in 2001~2006

Abstract

Objective To survey status of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in Taizhou City. Methods Children were selected by cluster sampling method and the thyroid goiter rate (TGR) and the levels of urinary iodine were detected respectively. The level of iodine in the iodized salt under processing, on market and in the houses of inhabitant were also detected at the same time. Results The highest TGR in children aged 8~10 years was 2.82% during the past 6 years and the median urinary iodine concentration was between 192.66μg/L and 274.49μg/L. The rate of qualified processing or wholesale iodized salt ranged from 93.28%~100%; The market coverage and consumption rate in population of qualified iodized salt was increasing, both over 95% and 90% respectively in the past two years. Conclusion The measurement for control and prevention of IDD with iodized salt supply is effective. The iodized salt is qualified The management of iodinized salt be stengthened for elimination of IDD and consolidating the success that has been achieved.
