University:The Existence of A Culture or Spirit

Since the mid-1990s,human society has entered a new era of economic globalization.The emergent phenomenon,which is characterized by material worship and neglect of humanity,indicates a global ecological and cultural crisis.Basically,it is a crisis of belief that is having a great impact on the world's higher education and the universities in China.Taking this into account,it is necessary to advocate the new idea that university is the existence of a culture or spirit,which can be seen as symbol of the cultural awareness of Chinese universities.This paper argues:university in nature is a cultural organization with unique functions;That culture is university's soul is the spiritual foundation for its survival;university culture is embedded with profound cultural details;and cultural recreation is achieved through selection,adaptation and reflection.
