Therapeutic effects of tympanostomy tube insertion on chronic secretory otitis media

Objective To investigate the therapeutic effect of tympanostomy tube insertion on the chronic secretory otitis media(CSOM),and to analyze the operative indications and complications.Methods A retrospective study was done in 45 patients(60 ears) with CSOM recruited from August 2000 to August 2006,who were treated by tympanostomy tube insertion.All patients showed no therapeutic effect after expectant treatment.Results All patients were followed up for 6 to 12 months.Among 60 ears,40 ears(66.7%) were cured,15 ears(25.0%) were improved and 5 ears showed no effect.The total effective rate was 91.7%.Tympanostomy tubes were pulled out 3 to 6 months after the operation in 36 ears,over 6 months in 16 ears,and the tubes in 5 ears ablated automatically and in 3 ears trapped in the tympanic cavity.The perforation of ear drum healed 2 to 3 weeks after the tube was pulled out or ablated.No inflammation was observed in all ears.Conclusions Tube insertion is an effective method for the therapy of CSOM.Strict comprehension for the operative indications and comprehensive treatment should be payed attention to.
