Effect of Transurethral KTP Laser Photoselective Vaporization for Treating Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Abstract

【Objective】 To investigate the safety and effectiveness of transurethral KTP laser photoselective vaporization of prostate(PVP) in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH).【Methods】 A total of 440 patents with BPH were treated between October 2004 to January 2007 with PVP,and evaluated 3~6 months postoperatively by International Prostate Symptom Score(IPSS),maximum urinary flow rate(Qmax)and Quality of Life(QOL).The median weight of the prostate was 49.4 g(range from 35 to 160g).【Results】The PVP was successfully performed on all the 440 patients and no patients required blood transfusion.The mean operative time was 52±33 min(range from 16 to 170min).The Qmax increased from 5.8±3.2 ml/s to 21.4±5.5ml/s.The IPSS decreased from 24.1 to 6.6.The QOL decreased from 5.3 to 1.5.Postoperative values of IPSS,QOL and Qmax showed significant improvement as compared with preoperative values(P0.05).【Conclusion】Transurethral KTP laser photoselective vaporization is a safe and effective method for the treatment of BHP.
