Orientation of Cultural Criticism in Study of Literature

Cultural criticism is undergoing mainly at the first three dimensions presently.Literature is an art expressed through language,representing cultural spirit and daily life.Cultural criticism will meet with literary criticism when literature is chosen as a criticized object under cultural criticism.The coverage of cultural criticism is at the dimensions of cultural spirit and daily life,while that of literary criticism at its aesthetic dimension.Literary criticism itself contains some subsets of critical methods.Motif study and prototype criticism belong to both literary criticism and cultural criticism.Literary criticism in a background of cultural study may have a larger room of explanation in such studies as comparative literature,the new literature of 'the May 4th movement',historical stories,feminist literature,post-modernist literature and so on.A suitable application of cultural criticism in literature study is determined by the cultural content of literary works.
