Abstract

A synthesis of isopropyl salicylicate using solid ferric sulphate as catalyst is reported. In the presence of 6% of the catalyst (with respect to the total mass of the two reactants), reaction of salicylic acid with isopropanol (in 1∶6 molar ratio) for 4 h gives isopropyl salicylicate in 94% yield. The properties of the catalyst is also discussed.
