Abstract

AIM: To explore the effect of epigallocatechin-3-gallate ( EGCG) on the proliferation of lung cancer cells and its mechanism. METHODS: Human lung cancer cell line A549 was cultured with and without EGCG and its suppressed curve was drawn. Apoptosis of the cells was analyzed by Hoechst staining. The expressions of survivin mRNA and protein were investigated by RT-PCR and Western Blot. RESULTS: EGCG inhibited the proliferation of the lung cancer cell A549 and cell apoptotic rate was increased to 18% when A549 was cultured with 60 mg/L EGCG (P0.01). The expression of survivin was inhibited significantly in A549 cells treated with 60 mg/L EGCG. CONCLUSION: EGCG can inhibit the growth of human lung cancer cells and induce cell apoptosis. Its mechanism may be associated with blocking survivin expression.
