Chomsky Hierarchy and Natural Language Grammars:From Phrase Structure Grammar to Non-transformational Grammar

Abstract

Transformational Grammar,aCopernican Revolutionin linguistic field,rose up as the core theory of modern Syntax shortly after its birth when Chomsky put it forward in the end of 1950 s. The present paper circumvents this long- redeemed glorious achievement of Transformational Generative Grammar,but finds its way from an almost forgotten contribution of Noam Chomsky— Chomsky hierarchy to illustrate the ambiguous relation between Computation theory and studies over Natural language Grammar. Through these evidences spreading over history,a particular and balancing picture of modern formal linguistics( especially syntax) is exhibited. This historical line is crucial for a better understanding of the real need of natural language processing for linguists.
