The Pollution Load from Livestock and Poultry Breeding in Northwest Semi-arid District: Taking Pingliang City of Gansu Provice as an Example

The situation of livestock and poultry breeding in Pingliang city during 2001 to 2010 were investigated for under- standing the environment pollution from the livestock and poultry industry. The results showed that the environmental issues resulting from livestock and poultry breeding were increasing seriously. The pollution loading and its corresponding warning value had been increasing annually from grade Ⅲ to grade Ⅳ. The primary pollutants were total phosphorusand total nitrogen TN. The main pollution were resulted from the excretions of large animals such as cattle. In 2010 the pollution at Huating County was most serious compared with the other investigated districts. Jingning County was the least but affected local sur- roundings. The total equivalent emission quantity of pollutants seeping into water was 249 221 700 tons with the largest from Kongtong District's and the least from Chongxin County's. TPwas the primary pollutants in every regions. Some practical sug- gestions of enhancing environmental management and planning were put forward to reduce environment pollution from livestock and poultry breeding in these districts.
