Abstract

Objective To analyze the expressions of p27 and PCNA and cell apoptosis in ulcerative colitis and colon cancer. Methods The expressions of p27 and proliferation cell nuclear antigen(PCNA)proteins in colorectal cancer, ulcerative colitis and normal colon were analyzed by StrptAvidin-Biotin Enzyme Complex immunohistochemical methods. The apoptosis was detected using terminal uridine deoxynucleiotide nick end labeling(TUNEL) histochemistry. Results The level of PCNA expression in colorectal cancer and ulcerative colitis was markedly higher than that in normal colon(P0.05).The MAI in p27 positive patients(0.93±0.32)was higher than that of p27 negative ones(0.39±0.18) in colorectal cancers(P0.05).The expression of PCNA in colon cancer has no relationship to p27.Conclusions The high expression of PCNA and the diffusive pattern of tissue distribution in ulcerative colitis may indicate cancer or a tendency to become cancer. The expression of p27 may not inhibit the cellular proliferation, but may accelerate apoptosis of colorectal cancer cells.
