Genotypic Differences Study on the Effects of Cadmium(Cd) on the Growth of Spinach(Spinacia oleracea)

Abstract

[Objective] The research aimed to study the genotypic differences in effects of cadmium(Cd) to the growth of spinach(Spinacia oleracea),to provide the reference for cultivating low cadmium of edible parts of spinach.[Method] The sixteen cultivars of spinach were grown in the nutrient solutions containing 10 mg/L cadmium using the mixed culture method with perlite and vermiculite.The effects of cadmium absorption and accumulation on the growth and physiological metabolisms of spinach were analyzed.[Result] The results showed that the weights of dry and fresh roots and shoots of spinach were significantly reduced when they were exposed in cadmium,and the dry weight ratio of shoot/root(S/R),the total biomass and the chlorophyll content of spinach were reduced.Cadmium concentrations ranged from 129.69 to 290.15 μg/gDW in shoots of spinach and from 87.26 to 1 487.67 μg/g DW in roots of spinach respectively after exposed in cadmium.The considerable genotypic differences of cadmium concentrations and accumulations in both shoots and roots were observed among 16 spinach cultivars.[Conclusion] Cadmium mainly accumulated in the roots.
