Abstract
Theme is an important concept in systemic functional grammar, which was first proposed by the founder of Prague School, V. Mathesius. After that, British famous linguist Halliday, in his`An Introduction to Functional Grammar'(1994/2000) pointed out, any clause or discourse can be divided into two semantic parts:theme and rheme from the perspective of communicative function. This paper, with the foundation of the theory of functional grammar(FG), starting with the theme in the textual metafunction , and with the example of the analysis of famous speech `I have a dream', states the function of thematic structure and thematic progrssion in the speech textual analysis.
